Kodai, or the foot of a tea bowl, can be a shining feature of a piece, as in this white Hagi glazed matcha tea bowl by Hagi potter Yamane Seigan (b. 1952). The Hagi glaze, celebrated for its viscous, creamy and pure white quality, has parted in such a way that highlights the quality of clay underneath. The variegated colors of the Hagi clay, firing in colors from red to black, offers an appetizing contrast on the surface of the tea bowl. This is a sturdy tea bowl with a robust character.
Yamane Seigan began training in Hagi wares in 1987, and founded his own kiln in 1992. He lives and works in Hagi.
