Cutting edge, versatile, skilled, and stylish are all words to describe contemporary ceramicist Tomoyuki Hoshino’s work. Born in 1976, Tomoyuki had a varied background before becoming a potter by profession. Born in Yamanashi, he originally studied economics and had a background in sales for several years before pivoting to ceramics and studying under the prominent potter Ikai Yuichi. His work, like his background, is extremely unique in color. Taking on his signature pale pink hue, his ceramics carry the message that craft is a universal language. He founded his own kiln “Yuki Kiln” in 2006 in Kokubunji-shi, Tokyo and since then, his distinctive work and style has won him several awards and featured him in many respected international ceramic exhibitions such as the Kikuichi Biennale, the Japan Traditional Kogei Exhibition, exhibitions at Mitsukoshi Isetan, and many more. His work is popular among contemporary ceramic collectors and those interested in contemporary design. Because of his apprenticeship under traditional ceramics in Japan, his works are also coveted among connoisseurs of Japanese ceramics.
One of the main characteristics of contemporary art and design is that it is constantly subject to change. Likewise, Tomoyuki is looking forward to changing and innovating in his craft to change towards an exciting future of new forms, colors, and shapes through the traditions and versatility of clay.
