Okazaki Takao (1946-) is a ceramic artist who specializes in various styles such as Shino, Shigaraki, Oribe, Kiseto, and more. While apprenticing under Katō Tōkurō 加藤唐九郎 and his son 重高両, he developed a refined approach distinct from their bold style. His focus primarily lies in Yakishime, but he enjoys the freedom to create different types of pottery based on the characteristics of specific clays like Shino, Shigaraki, and Karatsu.
One of his notable works is his work in Shino glazes and Kuro glazes, such as this Setoguro tea bowl. He also creates works with ash glazes.
Okazaki Takao has connections with renowned ceramic artists like Peter Voulkos, Peter Callas, and Kristin Müller. Inspired by their cultures and personalities, he completed the significant masterpiece "Prometheus," symbolizing the dual nature of human triumph and foolishness ignited by fire.
