Takeuchi Kimiaki (1948-2011) began learning wheel throwing when he was a middle school student. He later met his lifelong teacher, Ezaki Issei (江崎一生), at the Tokoname Ceramic School. Ezaki was a pioneer who studied and recreated old Tokoname ware from the Heian to Kamakura periods, one of Japan's six ancient kiln sites. Before his efforts, Tokoname ware had been largely forgotten. Ezaki's pieces are rooted in traditional techniques yet exhibit a modern aesthetic. As a teacher, Ezaki was both harsh and determined, particularly when it came to perfecting beautiful lines. Takeuchi has dedicated himself to pursuing his teacher's path.
