The Living National Treasure Tomimoto Kenkichi used white slip to paint the characters Wind, Flower, Snow, Moon (風花雪月) on red dyed paper. The pictophonetic nature of Kanji offers much room for imagination; his fluid, expressive brushwork on each radical creates a composition that verges on abstract expressionism.
A rare departure from his celebrated painted surface decoration on ceramics, Tomimoto’s pictorial sensibilities naturally extends to this rare framed painting, where his signature brushwork finds new form beyond pottery.
