A contemporary of Kawai Kanjiro and Hamada shoji, Kawamoto Goro (1919-1986) is a lesser known artist overseas, however, he is a versatile and talented artist. Born in a Seto family of potter, Kawamoto Goro is regarded as a genius of pottery. He has superb skills and an unconventional approach to form his works in both stoneware and porcelain. This is a beautifully craftedd tea bowl, with an exzuberent ash glaze. The textural quality of the surface is unique, while the interior contains a generous glaze to gaze upon while one whisks tea.
The textural quality of this piece highlights the Tsuchi-aji (Earthen taste) of the Seto clay; one can can see the character of Set pottery via this chawan’s sandy surface. Kawamoto Goro is an award winning artist. He is a hidden jewel compared to his contemporaries.
