Modern ceramics frequently draw inspiration from ancient Chinese and Korean incense burner designs, reinterpreting these historic forms through the lens of contemporary ceramic artistry. A notable comparison can be seen between a Qing dynasty jade incense burner from the Metropolitan Museum of Art (click here for more details) and the form of this celadon piece by Japanese potter Miyashita Zenju (1901-1988), who is the father of the celebrated contemporary potter, Miyashita Zenji. The similarity between the two illustrates how traditional shapes and materials are transformed in modern ceramic practices.
