Born in 1938 in Tokoname – one of the Six Ancient Kilns of Japan, Koie Ryoji (1938-2020) was a force in the Tokoname pottery industry, having been deeply influenced by American Modernist movements while also being highly experimental with the Tokoname tradition. This Oribe stoneware jar has a dynamic green glaze with incised geometric surface designs. A jar of this size and execution makes it a star piece of Koie's extensive portfolio of contemporary ceramics.
