Born in Shiga, Sawa Kiyotsugu (b. 1948) studied in the Shigaraki tradition under Takahashi Shunsai (b. 1927), who he trained under for 5 years. He emerged in the ceramic scene from Kyoto. Before working in Shigaraki, he worked in the Senryuji temple, where he encountered ash-glazed ceramics in a more naturalistic setting, affirming his commitment to the Shigaraki tradition. His skill shows in the sheer range of visual textures he is able to achieve through ash glazes. Some of his works carry a glassy, lightweight feel, while others are bold, strong, and intense. This "Affect" of each piece is exceptionally intentional.
