Modern Mishima pottery refers to a ceramic technique imported to Japan from Korea, namely Buncheong type pottery. The characteristic inlaid slip features a pale semi-transluscent glaze with a gray slip. The Kyoto University graduate Furumatsu Atsushi (b. 1973) was fascinated by Korean pottery and studied under the late Yoshida Akira, who was famous for his pottery of the Korean Joseon Dynasty. This cup shows poetic Kanji referring to the sky.
Currently, Furumatsu has built a split bamboo climbing kiln in Minamiizu, inheriting the style of his teacher.
