Born in Tokyo, and having studied lacquer ware, Asano Akira (1923-1997) was interested in writing, ceramics, and design. This interest manifested in his ceramics, which often investigated literary forms in an avant-garde design, ultimately reimagining the design of functional ceramics. Asano's works have been exhibited extensively at international institutions such as the Smithsonian and the Victoria and Albert Japanese ceramic exhibitions.
