Kaneta Masanao is an eighth generation Hagi potter who has pushed the boundaries of his heritage towards a sculptural style. His forms have a strong and dramatic presence: the weighty clay glazed with a white-pink glaze takes on both form and function. Rather than using wheel-thrown techniques, he digs into his clay to shape his forms, shaping his pieces from inside out. This inverse technique, called kurinuki, is uniquely bold yet delicate. The heavy clay collapses easily. As a result, his artistic process is one wherein he continuously fights gravity and weight his kiln-fired works. This is a fantastic example of his functional ware.
