This Tea Bowl showcases the Tokyo-born artist Ichikawa Toru’s innovative reimaginations of traditional ceramic functional wares. Ichikawa studied under Kakurezaki Ryuichi 隠崎隆一 (b. 1953), and developed a signature combination of using polychrome and celadon glazes over Bizen clay to adorn his sculptural ceramics. The effect almost always consists of a smooth, nacreous surface overlying what would be a rough surface formed by raw-fired Bizen clay. Ichikawa Toru’s contemporary eye shines through in this round tea bowl that fits in the palm of one's hand.
