Impermanence is a central theme in Japan, with Mutability, 無常 (Mujyo), being celebrated every springtime when cherry blossoms are in full swing.
Shingu Sayaka (b. 1979) has given a new life to this cut flower. Its solid, pale form sculpted en plein air from a fresh cut flower. Inside the piece, there is an androecium which she has kneaded individually by hand. This time-intensive piece, a labor of love, is a relatively small and delicate piece mimicking the delicate size of sakura flowers, yet it holds has very strong presence.
