Born in Shimane, the potter Hara Kiyoshi was taught by two Living National Treasures Ishiguro Munemaro from 1954, and later on, Shimizu Uichi. Their influences shine in their skill over glazes. Likewise, Hara has mastered several glazes over stoneware in his utilitarian wares. From the 1980s, he began to carve out his signature style by honing a signature semi-opaque blue glaze, and with images of horses. His immersion into ceramics over both porcelain and stoneware has earned him a Bearer of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2005.
He opened his own kiln in Setagaya, Tokyo in 1965. Hara is a member of the Japan Kogei Association after having exhibited extensively with an illustrious career consisting of solo exhibitions at Takashimaya, Mitsukoshi Nihonbashi, and other institutions who are pillars of Japanese ceramics.
