The Mingei potter Shimaoka Tatsuzo was the second Living National Treasure of Mashiko, Japan. In this jar, he has skillfully employed Hakeme, a technique originally from Korea, in which he has brushed white slip over a dark clay body. Over this, he has painted an impression of the delicate leaves of bamboo.
Inspired by Korean glazes in his lifetime, he combined Jomon firing techniques with Korean white slip “Bunching” glazing to create his iconic “Jomon Zogan” pottery.
